Reviewing the Voigtlander 40mm f/2 SL Ultron
Voigtlander has the best names for lenses: Heliar. Nokton. Skopar. Ultron. Can’t beat a lens named Ultron!
So here’s a review of one such lenses, the rather old 40/2 SL Ultron. This is from their SL line, ie SLR line. You can still buy this new in Nikon F mount and I’ve owned this both in F and Canon EF (which they have now stopped producing) forms.
The lens itself is a pancake, a tiny little lens that almost disappears when on the camera. Over the years there have been a few iterations of this lens and, bizarelly, the latest one is the bulkiest one, without actually adding anything. Just style changes.
Currently, I own the Canon EF version, the earlier one that is more compact.
The lens itself is small and light, has a small front-end element and comes complete with a close-up filter and an adapter to mount it. The adapter itself is effectively a step-down ring which you can leave on the lens all the time to act as a hood!
